Fall Flood Control: What We’re Up to This (and Every) Fall
Each season presents its own challenges and opportunities for North Texas flood control and for our team at IFCD 3. Whether the dryness of winter, the heavy rains of spring or the heat of summer, IFCD 3 plans proactive activities and protective measures to protect Valley Ranch residents and businesses from the damaging effects of flooding.
With temperatures falling and lower rain totals, fall is a great time for the District to conduct proactive system maintenance and complete activities prevented by harsh weather conditions during other times of the year.
Here’s what you’ll find the IFCD 3 team working on during the fall months:
Beginning and Continuing Repairs - Fall typically brings cooler temperatures and more moderate amounts of rainfall, which creates an ideal environment for maintenance and repair projects across the system. Whether starting a new project or wrapping up summer initiatives, the shift to cooler weather makes it easier to work outside during regular daytime hours without the risks of extreme heat or cold.
Maintaining Water Levels - Fall tends to bring less rain than spring or early summer, but North Texas still experiences an occasional storm this time of year. The IFCD 3 team keeps a constant watch on weather conditions, monitoring Valley Ranch water levels and engaging flood control methods as needed to maintain safe water levels throughout the community’s canals.
Cleaning Up Trash and Debris - Removing trash and debris from waterways is important year-round to effective flood control. During the fall, you’ll find our team removing larger amounts of fall leaves, along with trash and debris, from the waterways by hand and with our automated trash robot, Scoop. Clearing Valley Ranch’s waterways protects our flood control facilities and pump station from damage, ensures the health and safety of residents and local wildlife, and helps us to reduce flood risk.
Planning Activities - October marks the start of IFCD 3’s fiscal year. The new fiscal year often kicks off the start of maintenance projects, new construction, community activities and more.
Fall may not threaten immediate flood risk, but the season keeps our team busy with infrastructure repairs, system maintenance, flood control prevention and planning. By taking a proactive approach, IFCD 3 improves flood control management in Valley Ranch, protecting the community both in the near-term and for years to come.
