Even During Severe Weather, IFCD 3 Has It Covered
Before Valley Ranch was established, this area was easily susceptible to flooding from the Trinity River. This made the area less than ideal for structures, let alone an entire community! To combat the risk of flooding, an extensive levee system was constructed to separate the land from the river.
Flash forward to today, the Irving Flood Control District Section III delivers around-the-clock flood control to Valley Ranch, which includes the maintenance of the levee and canal system. Thanks to flood control, Valley Ranch has been able to grow into a thriving neighborhood.
While you may have noticed an increase in severe weather over the past few years, rest assured, IFCD 3 continues to be prepared for severe weather and flooding. We’ve invested in high-quality, durable equipment to ensure that Valley Ranch continues to be a safe community for residents and businesses alike.
Throughout the year, our team works on several projects to reinforce and update our existing flood control system, so that Valley Ranch can continue to weather the storm:
- Our backup source of commercial power for the pump station allows us to run the pumps whenever needed, even in the case of a power outage.
- Industry experts conduct routine maintenance checks on all equipment and determine when certain items need replacing.
- Generally, trees can be helpful to reduce flooding when planted strategically. However, if trees are located in select run-off areas, they can trap debris and slow the flow of water. IFCD 3 occasionally removes trees that pose a risk of preventing proper drainage.
- Trash removal is key to keeping our waterways clear so that water can run where it’s supposed to go and steer clear of the neighborhood
- Installation of floodgates, also called stop gates, allow us to control water flow in flood barriers, reservoirs, rivers and levee systems.
As weather conditions remain extreme, you can sleep well knowing that IFCD 3 is committed, capable and determined to keep the Valley Ranch community safe from severe flooding.
