IFCD 3 Wraps Up Fifth Year of School Education Program

And that’s a wrap! This month, we completed the fifth year of our local education program for elementary schoolers about weather patterns and flood control.

IFCD 3 team members first visited Valley Ranch Elementary last month to present to the students about flood control and IFCD 3’s role in the community. At the end of the presentation, the second-grade teachers introduced a hands-on project to the students, tasking them with building their own flood control model.

Flash forward to mid-March, when our team and other school volunteers revisited campus for the project’s Judging Day. IFCD 3 representatives met with each group of students to learn about the group’s construction strategy and to create mock weather conditions to test each project model. We scored each group based on creativity, thought process and, of course, their model’s ability to control different mock weather conditions.

After seeing all four classroom’s projects, let’s just say we may have some future engineers and weather experts here in Valley Ranch!

VRE Librarian, Anu Khosla, said it best, “The second graders showcased great learning in partnership with Irving Flood Control District. These awesome projects were so hard to judge!” The students were giddy to show us their creations and even proposed changes to improve the models if they were to do the project again.

All in all, the project was a great success. The students learned about flood control in a hands-on way and now understand IFCD 3’s role in protecting Valley Ranch from severe weather.

On behalf of the entire IFCD 3 team, thanks to second-grade teacher, Liz Watson, and the entire Valley Ranch Elementary staff for continuing to partner with IFCD 3. We’re happy to be a part of your extended community team.
