Summer Camp with IFCD 3
After six years of IFCD 3’s in-school flood control education program and launching our online learning resource, IFCD 3 for Kids, last summer, we’ve taken our youth education program a step further by completing our first-ever summer camp!
On June 12, IFCD 3 partnered with the Cimmaron Park Recreation Center to teach K-5 summer camp students about weather and flood control. The half-day of programming included a weather presentation from NAME, a weather-themed snack, flood control education from the IFCD 3 team and a group project to build trash collection models.
Coloring and Word Searches
IFCD 3 started the day off with a soft introduction to weather and flood control, providing students with themed coloring pages and Valley Ranch-specific word searches to work on as families checked into camp for the day.
Weather
With coloring pages and word searches complete, Karna kicked off the formal programming for the day by providing the students with an introduction to weather, teaching the students about precipitation, cloud types, thunder and lightning and more!
Flood Control
After a weather-themed snack break, IFCD 3’s very own Tim Benefiel taught students about the different tools that go into flood control, including Valley Ranch’s canals, pump station, levee and trash collecting robot, Scoop.
Tim then tasked students with building their own Scoop models using crafting supplies. Students put their Scoop models to the test, attempting to pick up “trash” throughout their table area.
A Special Thank You
This programming would not have been possible without the Cimarron Park Recreational Center’s commitment to collaboration with neighboring organizations. Thank you to the rec center team for helping IFCD 3 expand our youth education program to more students across Valley Ranch!
