Year Six of IFCD 3’s Partnership with Local Elementary Schools
Another year, another successful IFCD 3 school program! Throughout January and February, our team completed our 2024 school program with two local elementary schools: Valley Ranch Elementary and Canyon Ranch Elementary. Here’s how this year’s program went:
During January, members of the IFCD 3 team visited the second-grade class at Valley Ranch and the third-grade class at Canyon Ranch to teach the students about types of weather, flood control and the work IFCD 3 does to keep the community safe. The students then had time to ask questions about flood control. Then, the students tasked with building their own flood control models, which would be judged by the IFCD 3 team and their teachers.
In February, the IFCD 3 team returned to the schools and met with the groups of students to learn about their flood control ideas and test their models. The groups were scored based on whether or not their model was successful at draining water, their creativity throughout the building process and their thought process when it came to what worked and what could be improved.
Thanks to support of their teachers and the information provided by IFCD 3, the students were able to build flood control models that demonstrated their understanding of IFCD 3’s tools and systems, proving they paid attention during the initial presentations!
On behalf of the entire IFCD 3 team, thank you to the staff of Valley Ranch Elementary and Canyon Ranch Elementary for your partnership and support of IFCD 3. We’re happy to be a part of your extended community team.
For any students who want to take their flood control knowledge to the next level, we encourage them to visit IFCD 3 For Kids, our online resource with additional flood control-related terms, a coloring book of Valley Ranch flood control tools, quizzes and trusted resources with more self-guided material.
