IFCD 3 Kicks Off Fifth Year of Local School Education Program
It’s official! We’ve kicked off yet another year of our school education program. For the past five years, we’ve partnered with Valley Ranch elementary schools to educate young people in the community on weather and flood control through an interactive class project.
Earlier ths month, operations team members visited Valley Ranch Elementary to introduce IFCD 3, the concept of flood control and a hands-on project to the second-grade class.
“The second-grade team and I are thrilled to carry on the tradition of the bringing the flood control project to VRE,” says Liz Watson. “Our learners are so excited to get back to hands-on science this year as part of STEM building. The IFCD3 team has been an amazing supporter and we can't wait for judging day in March!”
During the course of the next few weeks, students will continue learning about the water cycle, the short- and long-term effects of flooding and how water can be stored and managed. Students then will split into smaller groups and build their own 3D flood control models, testing them with mock weather conditions.
Once each group has worked as a team to create their innovative flood-control model, members of the IFCD 3 team will revisit Valley Ranch Elementary to judge the finished projects. The judges will score each group based on creativity, thought process and, of course, their model’s ability to control different mock weather conditions.
