Celebrating Earth Day 2024

First celebrated in America in 1970, Earth Day has grown to include celebrations in more than 192 countries and contributed to an increased awareness of environmental impact. Whether it be holding a festival, cleaning up trash or planting trees and plants, millions of people use Earth Day to do something positive for the planet.

In honor of the holiday, which occurred earlier this week, we’re highlighting a few ways to celebrate right here in Valley Ranch.

  1. Plant Native Pollinators – Planting native pollinators in your flowerbeds or outdoor pots can help wildlife populations, such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, thrive in Valley Ranch. View this guide from the Fort Worth Botanic Garden to learn the importance of pollination and some of the best plants for pollinators in North Texas.
  2. Enjoy Valley Ranch’s Parks and Paths – Our beautiful community is filled with parks and trails that make outdoor activities easily accessible. In a previous Waterways blog, we highlighted the many parks and trails available throughout Valley Ranch that are the perfect setting for enjoying Earth Day.
  3. Recycle Eligible Items – The practice of recycling can help eliminate waste in landfills. By taking time to recycle eligible paper, plastic and glass products, you help eliminate waste and boost sustainability.
  4. Pick Up Trash – Taking time to pick up litter and properly dispose of your trash helps protect the environment and native wildlife. It also helps keep our flood control system free of blockage. To help tackle trash on a larger scale, we encourage you to participate in one of Keep Irving Beautiful’s regularly hosted clean-up events throughout our community.
  5. Volunteer with the Valley Ranch Green Club – This organization has been working since 2015 to protect and improve the natural resources and wildlife in Valley Ranch. They work to provide education to residents of the neighborhood and increase the use of native trees and plants. They’ve also worked to designate Valley Ranch as a Wildlife Habitat Community with the National Wildlife Federation.

We hope this Waterways blog inspires you to help the environment and celebrate Earth Day! We encourage everyone to continue celebrating the health and beautification of our community throughout the rest of Earth Month.
